What is in it, and why.
- A full carbon bed, not a shared one
- Chloramine is stubborn. Carbon removes it slowly and needs dwell time to do it. A dedicated tank gives the water a full bed to travel through instead of a layer sharing space with resin.
- The carbon never sees brine
- In a blended tank, every regeneration cycle pulls salt brine through the carbon along with the resin. A separate carbon tank sits outside that cycle entirely, so the media does the one job it was made for.
- Each tank backwashes on its own schedule
- The carbon bed gets its own backwash to stay loose and evenly packed, which prevents channeling — water finding a path around the media instead of through it.
- Full softening capacity too
- Because the resin tank is all resin, you are not giving up grain capacity to make room for carbon. That matters in bigger homes and on the 15 to 19 grain supplies out in Fort Bend and Waller County.
- Replace only what is spent
- Carbon has a shorter service life than softening resin. With separate tanks you change the carbon when the carbon is done, instead of pulling a blended bed apart.

Questions about dual-tank system.
Do I actually need two tanks?
Most homes do not. The single-tank Complete Home System at $3,500 handles a typical Houston household well. The dual-tank build earns its $350 when chloramine taste or shower smell is the main complaint, when the household is large, or when the supply is at the hard end of our range. We tell you which one your home calls for at the free water test.
What is the difference between $3,500 and $4,000?
The second tank. On the single-tank system, softening resin and carbon share one vessel. On the dual-tank system, the resin gets a full tank and the carbon gets a full tank of its own. Everything else is identical — same media, same tankless reverse osmosis drinking system, same licensed installation, same lifetime warranty.
Why does a separate carbon tank work better on chloramine?
Contact time. Chloramine is chlorine bonded with ammonia, and it is far more persistent than free chlorine — carbon strips it slowly. The longer the water spends in contact with carbon, the more comes out. A full dedicated bed gives it that time. This is also why a pitcher or faucet-mount filter struggles: the water moves past too little carbon, too fast.
Which Houston areas benefit most?
The MUDs that converted from groundwater to blended surface water and switched to chloramine with it — Katy, Cypress, Spring, Klein, Sugar Land, Missouri City, Conroe, Pearland and Houston proper. If your complaint is taste or a smell in the shower rather than scale on the faucet, this is the build to ask about.
Does it take up much more space?
One additional tank of the same footprint, so plan on roughly twice the width of a single-tank install. Most Katy and Cypress garages have the wall for it. We measure at the water test before anything is ordered.
